I have just received these images of Bella enjoying life in Nfld.. She is between 14 and 15 months here. Fortunately for me this year, I have not had to deal with the snowballs as we have had little snow. Not the same for Karen . However, snow is way better than the mud that follows!!

I am told Bella loves a trip on the snowmobile and is happy regardless of where she is so long as she is with mom and dad!

All the pups from Raven's third litter are now 6 months old. Here are pictures of Bentley and his family ready for Christmas. What lovely pictures and how well he seems to fit in here. I am told he finished puppy school and is a good puppy. These 6 months have gone by quickly and, as I kept Marcus, the other boy in the litter, I can track their growth.

Marcus and Bentley have already been neutered. Just the three girls to be done now.

Meet Marcus

This is the family of porties at my house. Marcus, lower right, is one of the males from Raven's last litter. As I am not breeding again, I decided to keep a pup. Three dogs is a lot but Kingsley no longer wants to walk most days so it is Raven and Marcus who run together.

Surprisingly, both Raven and Kingsley will play with Marcus so he is being well socialized. He also is not particularly strong willed so he is easy to train so far. He can get up onto the sofa and climb the stairs so goes where they go. He had his last needle this week and is weighing in at 26 pounds at three months, all dog, no fat!!

I have pictures of Bella but somehow, they have found a home on my computer and I don't know the address! As soon as I find them, I will post.

Vet Check

Just a quick note to say the vet check gave all pups a perfect health clearance. Not one of those babies was sick in the car on the 40 minute drive to Truro nor did one pee in the car. Not one cried with a needle jab nor did one pee on the floor of the office. Dr. McKay was so impressed with each of them. The micro chipping was more difficult but then, the implanter looks like it was designed for cows!! None peed in the car on the way home. You can guess what they all did when they were released at home. What wonderful babies they are!!

Here they are around my feet as I play Wubba with Kingsley and Raven. These sounds are their excited yippings. This is their first trip outside the fence and they don't move too far away from Raven or me. You should see them first thing in the morning when I let them out of the enclosed area. They are all swarming around my feet for a cuddle before they will eat their kibble. Such loving babies!!

Off to the vets this afternoon, always an adventure. I have no doubt Dr. McKay will give all of them a clean bill of health.

The boy with the yellow collar is now called Bentley and the smallest girl is Pearl.

They love to do this outside. Tumbling about and chasing one another is their favorite game. Yesterday was a good day, hot, so they actually crawled into the baby pool I have on the deck and laid in the water for a few minutes. A new discovery for them.

Today is a different story for it is pouring rain and cool. Just like their parents, they love the water but aren't so keen on the rain. However, they all went down to the grass for their business. Not for the pees though. Funny! Some step out on the deck, its wet, step back in the house and pee on the paper!

Tennya visits

Tennya and her family have been spending the summer at the beach in P.E.I.. Lucky her!! They dropped in yesterday on their way through to Halifax so we could visit. It was great to see her. Remember, she was the tiny one from the last litter. For a 9 month old pup, she is very well behaved and listens well. This family has worked hard to make sure she is well-mannered.

I know, she is bushy so it belies the fact she weighs only 40 pounds. No doubt, when she finally returns to life in Ottawa, she will have a trip to the groomers'. When I get that picture, I will post it.

They now play much of the time out of doors. They particularly like to be under something. We have an old bench on the grass under which they play a lot. They are learning that it hurts when you bite which is a good thing. They often forget though and need reminding!

You can see behind them on the deck my "doggy screen"! They come and go as they like in to out all day long. They still prefer sleeping under the love seat though.

They started on dry puppy food today. Good for their teeth.

The three girls are on the blanket while the 2 boys chew at the bone. They all have sharp teeth now so fingers and toes beware! Lilly has a blue ribbon, diva Portia has a rhinestone encrusted pink collar while the other girl remains collar free. She is the smallest so easy to make out. One of the boys has a yellow collar while the white nosed guy has a blue collar. The dollar store now has the cutest collars for little dogs. A good price as they soon outgrow these little ones.

They are getting used to the grass. It is funny to watch them have the first experience of it under their feet. They now explore more of the yard and most climbed the steps of the deck for the first time today.

They sleep through the night from 9 PM til 6 AM without a sound. Raven is upstairs so as not to disturb them. They have moved out of the whelping box and now share a very large crate. In the daytime, they sleep mostly under the loveseat or in the middle of the floor, wherever they drop!

4 1/2 weeks

This is their second play time this morning and it's
barely 8 A.M.! You can see both Lily and Portia wrestling with the boy who has a white chest. The clicking sound you hear in the beginning is Lily chewing on an old bone at the door. They now go through my "doggy screen' to the deck outside. They are still not really happy on the grass although some like it for their poops. They are now on solid food- puppy food which is crushed and souped up. Only the smallest girl does not have teeth yet. This will be their food for the next 2 weeks gradually reducing the water until it is dry and whole by 7 weeks.

My goodness but these guys are fast, noisy and busy. This morning, after feeding, this is how they play. They change daily in their confidence. They all went outside this morning for elimination. I will carry them for a few days til they learn how to go down the deck steps. Yesterday, they were slow to move around on the grass. Today, no such concern. Tomorrow, they will explore the fenced back yard even more.

They have started exploring outside the whelping box. In fact, two of them use the paper to pee on. They now come to me when they hear my voice. The girl with the red ribbon is Portia while the blue ribbon girl is Lily. You can hear the music they make as they play with one another.

All three girls have been found places in loving families. Just the two boys who need forever families.

I took the end off the whelping box today so, when they are ready { which will be soon}, they will venture out on paper to do their business. Then back into the box to play. Raven still cleans up after them so I have not had to pick up any poop YET!!

Just received this picture of Tennya. She is spending the summer with her humans on PEI. That should be the best time for her. Hope they all have great water weather and thoughly enjoy their time together.

They are all 8 days old today and changing daily. They are chubby little ones but no wonder with the way their mom feeds them. A couple are trying to get up on all fours but to no avail. It won't be long though. I wait for their eyes to open. That seems to be when things start to happen. Meantime, it's still eat and sleep. Mom looks after the toileting. I am grateful for that!!

5 Beauties

Although Raven delivered 6 live puppies in 2 1/2 hours on Thurs., the smallest fellow was not strong enough to survive. We now have 2 males and 3 females, all curly coats. they have some markings of white on chests and feet except for one girl who is all black.

This is Raven's last litter and, as I have only one pair, this is the end of breeding for me. I have met my goal when I started doing this as a hobby. My goal was to make this breed more common in the Maritimes. From 5 litters, there are 29 puppies placed by Jayfarm Kennels and only 3 of those have gone out of the Maritimes.

I will continue my commitment though, to take back any one of my pups for his or her lifetime if the situation deems he or she needs rehoming. I have had to do this only once because of a sudden health issue. The rehoming happened in less than 12 hours.

So I have 5 puppies available for adoption.

A quick note to say Raven is waiting for something to happen. Nature is taking its' course and will not be rushed. She does a lot of panting and seems much larger than her last breeding. She has been walking with me every day although I have shortened the walk by 10 minutes. As soon as the big event happens, I will post it here. I am ready this time with an air mattress so I can rest in a little more comfort instead of on a love seat for 10 days!

Raven is past 8 weeks of pregnancy and she looks like it. She seems to be carrying pups really low this time around. So much so that I can feel them moving when she is lying next to me. Awesome! So I am sticking close to home this week as she could go into labour anytime.

This is a recent picture of Bella. She has just started group lessons. Her family are doing everything to make sure Bella is a well behaved, well socialized girl. It will all pay off in the end to make a great family member. I am told Bella is 45 pounds now but Tennya is 35 pounds. Tennya was the smallest pup and it seems she will stay small.

Porty Party 2011

In spit of the weather being overcast, dreary and cool, all who attended enjoyed the day out with all the porties. We were there about 2 hours watching all the antics, visiting with one another and sharing stories. It,s always fun hearing about other's experience with this wonderful breed. Of course, the dogs just enjoyed the romp and the water. They don't care about the weather except for the little pups who found it a bit too cold once they got wet.

The first pic is of Kingsley sitting in front of me hoping to have my hat to guard {the working dog's desire}. The second is Kingsley and Raven with their new young friend. The third is a picture of the some of the gang at the water and the last is a picture of Murphy and Sammy.

You are all reminded of the porty party on Sunday in Wentworth. I hope we have a good turnout and the weather is good. There are black flies here now so you might want to remember the bug spray.

You will all be surprised to learn that Raven will be having her third litter in June. I am breaking one of my own rules by breeding back to back. My main reason is the timing both for pups and families. I like to start training of pups before they go to new homes and that is a lot easier in August than February! I have had her checked out by Jen, my vet, and she has given me a 110% endorsement. She says she is young, healthy and in perfect reproduction condition.

The porty party will be held in the Wentworth Provincial Park which is on the #4 highway, the old trans-Canada. Leave the 4 lane 104 at Masstown { 10 minutes past Truro} . Travel north { west} for 20 minutes. Pass the ski hill. Travel 1 mile more and you will see the park on your left. It is closed until the May 24 weekend to vehicle traffic but we can enter on foot and have a great day. There are walking trails, a river for water play and lots of picnic tables. Let's hope for a warm spring day. Coming from Amherst way, exit the 4 lane east of Oxford { next exit}. Turn left at top of ramp. Keep traveling for about 15 minutes. The park is across from 14143 civic #. All porties are welcome or anyone interested in meeting this gorgeous breed.

Max and Jazz have both been groomed and have visited to show off their new look. this picture doesn't do a good job of that though.

These 2 are brother and sister but from different litters.

I am thinking we should have another porty party in the park before it opens to the public for the season. The date will be the third Sunday in May, the 15th. The weather should be more pleasant then. If anyone wants to make a picnic out of the trip, there are picnic tables available. Anyone interested? The last one was fun to see all the porties together.

Bella is growing--- and so are her puppy antics!! She is still going to obedience and travelling everywhere with her "parents" so she is being well socialized. It will pay off down the road for sure.
She has learned the "catch me for your keys" game!! From all accounts, she is good at it too! Not as much fun for her "parents" though!
Bella will be spayed in a couple of weeks. The time has gone by so fast.

We've got snow!

We have just returned from our walk. Kingsley and Raven always "work" on the walk home by carrying something, Raven a "squeeky" and Kingsley my mitt. Fortunately, I have a rural sideroad rarely traveled but plowed on which I walk.

More hints on puppy training--- Raven would growl at her pups and that was all needed to make them leave her alone usually. So you all could try the gutteral low growl or some such sound that is distinct. Also. in training, always preceed a command with pup's name. This defines the command for her, not Max or Murphy or your child. It also reinforces the learning of a name. Keep the command simple, they will learn the words. Be consistent, a certain behavior always receives a response. Always carry a few treats, little pieces of dried liver, weiners, etc and try to catch good behavior and reward that. I truly believe in reinforcing good behavior. Remember, these babies are learning a tremendous amount every day.

Socializing to strangers, children, other dogs is important so get them out as much as you can.

Bella 11 weeks

Bella is enjoying life in Newfoundland! She has learned to sit. lay down and shake a paw. She is being mouthy, such a common thing with puppies. My suggestion is to substitute a bone or toy for your fingers! As Karen is doing, a "no bite" command at the same time helps in the teaching.

Of course, with their mouths is how they learn about their world so mouthing is understandable. At this age, they are sponges soaking up lots of information and developing confidence. The hard work at this age will pay dividends in a few months.

By all reports, all pups are doing well. Murphy weighs over 20 pounds, Bella is 12 pounds and Molly is 15. This was at their 10-11 week booster. Hail and healthy!!

They are 8 weeks old today and happy. Busiest play time when they tear around the

kitchen is first thing in the morning and after supper at night. They eat 3 times a day and will continue to do so until 5 months or so. They are all on dry kibble now.

On the right, they are lined up watching me play fetch with Kingsley and Raven outside the fence. On the top is Max and unnamed chilling on the couch.

Ribbon fun

Here they are in the first snow. They slid in it, licked it and nosed it. It is amazing how quickly they learned to run up and down these steps. Now after play or sleep, I open the door and they go out to the grass usually doing jobs while there. They often stay out for 15 min. or more. Murphy particularly loves being out.

The vet visit was a complete success. All pups are perfect, not even an umbilical hernia. Not to mention that not one urinated on her floor in the hour we were there!

I take them outside several times a day. They don't stay out more than 5 minutes as it is pretty cold but you can see they love the wide open spaces to run about. While out there, they do their business. It is amazing how fast they catch on. They are eating moistened ground puppy kibble although all of them have needles for teeth now. I will switch to dry food within the next few days.

Friday is vet day when they will receive their first shots and their identifying number. I have no doubt but that all of them will be declared healthy.

5 weeks

Here they are at 5 weeks. They all have brown eyes now. Just changed from blue. They all had their first bath as they roll around on the floor with no regard for the liquid which may be there. My best friend now is the mop!

Murphy was outside today, the first to do so. Did his business there.

This is Max and Bella wrestling over a toy. In the background is the unnamed one. Murphy is sleeping behind the sofa and Molly is nursing. They are all eating ground and moistened puppy food laced with goat's milk 3 times a day. I am using Kirkland's puppy food but you can use whatever brand you want.

They are 4 weeks today. Here they are playing after breakfast. They are becoming more steady on their feet. I am introducing a bowl of goat's milk to all of them so they can learn to lap.

Finally. Raven's mastitis ruptured last night in two places. It is now draining and she is getting some relief from the pain. She has continued to nurse these pups every 2 hours in spite of her health. She is amazing.

As you can see, they are all getting bigger. The little wavy girl is catching up with the others. She is a fighter and a strong suckler so she can hold her own. The big fellow's ears are starting to come unstuck. A few of them are starting to get up on 4 wobbly legs instead of dragging their little bodies along the bed. Changes every day. So fun to watch

Restitution

I need to let all of you know that the vet and the clinic which made a mistake with Raven's section have refunded me all the cost of the two days' emergency calls. That happened immediately. Today, I received restitution for the lost puppies and a hand written note from the surgeon offering sincere apologies for the errors made during Raven's section. Mistakes happen but, for me, taking ownership of those mistakes and hopefully, learning from them so it doesn't happen to anyone else helps me move on. I am grateful for that.

Mastitis

Raven has developed mastitis, an infection of her milk glands. Fortunately, I know her so well that I was able to get her to the vet right away when I saw she was not well. She developed this in less than 3 hours so it came on very quickly. However, that doesn't lessen the pain she was in. Dr. McKay happened to still be in the office and got antibiotics into her and a pain medication. I brought her home, carried her in and she laid on her side to let the pups suckle. This morning, the affected teat is still really swollen but she is back nursing like normal. As you can see, the pups are doing fine.

Rough 3 days

Raven has had a rough 3 days. On Thurs., she shocked me by going into labour at 9 PM. To make a long stressful story short, I took her to emergency in Truro where she delivered 2 more pups naturally. This was painful for her since she has an long incision inside and out from Wed's C section but she is strong and she did it. Unfortunately, the sad ending is that these 2 pups perished, stillborn. I would have been surprised if they had survived considering what they had gone through.

Today, finally, she is acting normal again. We have just come in from her first walk in days where she romped a little.She is an excellent mother and all pups appear to be growing. Certainly, the big guy in the middle is thriving!

ONE DAY OLD

Just took this picture. As you can see, some are smaller than others. The biggest fellow is a wavy male. There are 2 curly ones, one male, the other female. The remaining 2 are female and wavy but with more curl around the shoulders. They all have some white on the chest and some on the toes. The big fellow is all black at this time. Sometimes. markings will show up as they grow. Others will fade if the marking is small. The important thing is that they are all healthy and Raven is a wonderful mom. She keeps them clean and fed.

Kingsley looks great. Finally found a groomer who knows the porty cut. Kathleen trains would be groomers on Bedford Hwy in a business called Tailwaggs. I took Kingsley there today and he has had a showcut similar to that done when he was a show dog. Just look at him!! Such a pretty boy!

I took Raven along but did not want to stress her this close to delivery date so her haircut is what I did myself and not finished at that. She has a hard time standing for long so I cut her hair in stages. I want it short because the first week after the pups come, it is hot in that whelping box. The box is set up and waiting but she shows no interest in it. Kingsley will sleep in it though!

HALF WAY

Raven is half way through her pregnancy with no problems. However, as of Sunday, she is off her food eating little. Since she had extra weight on anyway, I don't worry. She will still gobble the treats though!

She is also less active and more shy around other dogs. Her body shape is changing in that her sides are expanding. She is also clinging more to me. All these are signs of pregnancy.

Raven was bred this morning. We have now moved to stage 3 of the reproductive cycle--- the one where we wait impatiently to see how many pups Raven has, whether they are boy or girl or wavy or curly. This stage lasts a long 8 1/2 to 9 weeks!

Stage 2

Finally, Raven has moved into stage 2 of her reproductive cycle. That means that she will be ready for mating within the next 16 days. Kingsley is still patiently waiting. This is his fourth breeding so he is more experienced now and knows how to wait. Next posting will be after the deed is done!!

Finally have my computer working again. I have not been very active here. These are some pics of Raven and Kingsley doing what they do every day. Summer is here so will be the heat. It will mean frequent trips a day to cool off in the river.

I expect to be breeding Raven again in August. As soon as it happens, I will post it here

This was a success according to all who attended and the weather was perfect. What fun to see 10 porties running and playing together. They also had an abundance of water time so all were happy. The parti colored girl is Nelly. I couldn't get a picture of all of them at one time. The best I did was 7 so I am missing 3 from this photo. If someone else has a better one, send it along and I will post it.

I AM PLANNING A PLAY DATE FOR PORTIES AND PORTY LOVERS> YOU ARE ALL INVITED TO WENTWORTH PROVINCIAL PARK APRIL 11 { SUNDAY} AT 2 P.M.. The snow will be gone, the park is still closed to the general public, there is water for swimming and trails for walking. Hopefullt, the sun god will shine on us.

Stormy weather date will be the following Sunday. Hope all of you interested will come and have a fun afternoon. You could even bring a picnic lunch. See you there!

Ted's haircut

This is Ted after his first haircut. You can see Carla likes to leave his hair somewhat longer but she can now see his face. He is just past 6 months and is doing wonderfully at obedience classes. GO, TED!

By the way, did any of you see DOG101 on the animal channel last evening? They featured the Portie and gave lots of interesting info on their history, temporment, health concerns, grooming, etc.. It was repeated this morning so may be again this week.

Blue and Ruby

Have just received these pics of Blue and Ruby. They are half siblings and are getting along well as per reports received. They are lucky to have family close by to take them for walks and front seat drives while parents are at work! Mum says both have just been groomed this week and look great.

Ruby was spayed in Jan. and Jazz was spayed this month. That leaves Ted who will be neutered once his obedience classes are finished. Those classes are important and going well so it would not do to interfer with that learning curve.

Raven's in heat

This is a pic I took today of Jazz who will soon be 6 months. HOW CUTE!! She is a busy but well behaved girl for a 5 month old pup. Soon it will be time for spaying!

The other is of Raven. She has gone into heat this week and it is less than 4 months since she stopped nursing pups. I think it is too soon for her to be bred again so I am going to skip this one. Therefore, there will be no spring litter for her. I am not sure when the next possible breeding will be but I will guess late summer. Time will tell.

Snowballs

I walk every day in spite of conditions. This winter has been wonderful so far. However, this is today 10 minutes ago! There were snowballs the size of tennis balls hanging off Kingsley and you can see Raven. Usually, once a winter I need to put them in the tub to melt the snow. Today was that time!

You can also see Kingsley has something in his mouth. He needs to work on his return walk and only carrying my mitten will do.

Ted at 5 months

This is Ted relaxing at 5 months. He recently visited and we all went for a walk { more like run for him and his parents} in the woods. He is a bouncy happy boy who likes everyone. He has started obedience classes in Amherst so that will help with his training. He is also getting his adult teeth so he loves to chew right now. So far, so good.

TED IN THE SNOW

This is a picture of Ted on Jan. 1st after a snowfall. He will soon be 6 months old.

Raven and Kingley also enjoy the snow but Raven much more so. She rolls, romps, runs and buries in it. As a result, she carries much of the white stuff into the house as snowballs on her hair! I keep a mop and a towel as permanent accessories at the door!

Jazz visits

Jazz visited with me for a few hours lately. She is a very active girl but took out a few minutes to play with this big chew rope ball. She and Raven exhausted one another as they chased and tumbled most of the visit time so this is a brief rest. I'm told she slept well that night!

Ted visits

This is Kingsley with Ted right behind him. This is typical of Kingsley when I am working in the kitchen. He gets pretty close to being right under my feet. Ted must have wanted the same thing. This is after a serious run and romp outside.

The second pic is Ted who came to visit for a couple of hours today. He is now 18 pounds. How quickly they grow in these early months. I'm told he is a wonderful fellow.

Entries here will not be frequent now that the pups are gone. Keep checking from time to time though to keep up on any "happenings".

All gone

All the pups have gone to new homes. By reports received, they are all settling in well with new families. It was hard to let them go this time but I know they will be well loved in their new homes and will get lots of love and attention. Having a small litter meant I could really get to know the personalities of the pups-- and they are all different.

Ted will come to stay for a week next week so I will post a pic of him at 11 weeks. This is the last video taken at 8 weeks.

7 WEEKS

They are now 7 weeks weighing about 10 pounds each with Ted being the smallest. The girls are about the same. They have an apt. on Tues. for the first set of needles and their vet check. They will be ready to go home anytime after that. In this video, Ted had already gone for a nap. He sleeps more than either of the girls.

They sleep together every night for 8 hours in the crate . They are eliminating outside for their poops but not always for their pees!! However, I think they will be easy to train at their new homes.

6 weeks

These pups are about 8 pounds now. Some breeders take the mother away at this age but I don't. Raven is still allowing them to nurse from her about 4 times a day and so long as she wants, I will let them do that. They must instictively know not to bite her!! At night, they are penned by themselves and have not been making a sound from bedtime til 6 or so in the A.M. Through the day, they are doing their poops outside and will go way down the yard out of their play area to do that. When they finish playing, they all run up the deck steps to go behind the sofa to sleep.

They are eating a good meal of wet ground puppy food 3 times a day. Tomorrow, I am going to start wet puppy food which is not ground. I'll do that for a week and then move to dry food.

5 WEEKS YESTERDAY!

Today they moved from the whelping box to a large crate for night time sleeping because the last 2 nights Jazz and Ruby escaped from the box. Ted won't get himself over the edge so he cries loud enough that I check to see what's going on. There I find both of the girls having a great time roaming the kitchen floor and Ted crying to get out too!!

In the day, they sleep where they drop around the room. Of course, that's only if I'm in the room. Otherwise, I lift them to the secure area.

Since most of the video is of Jazz and Ted, I have included a still of Ruby. Ted is the pup with the red collar.

4 weeks today

What a difference a week makes! These are active busy pups now when they are playing. They are just as likely to drop in their spots and fall asleep. They were introduced to the green grass yesterday thus learning new smells. Raven is still feeding them frequently as Jazz is the only one with a mouthful of needles { teeth }! It won't be long though before they all have those needles and Raven won't be so anxious to feed them. Amazingly, she is STILL cleaning up after them. Kudoos to her! They are eating solids but she feeds them so often that they are not hungry and don't eat much of the softened puppy food.

3 weeks old

Today they are three weeks old. Since they can walk pretty well, I introduced them to lapping by giving them goat's milk on a shallow dish. They knew just what to do with it! Raven loved it best because she got the leftovers and what they wore! She did a good job of cleaning them up.

Our wavy girl has been named. She is Ruby so we have Ted, Jazz and Ruby. I already use the names when I talk to them. They should know their names when they go home.

2 weeks old

These pups are 2 weeks old today. Their eyes are all open and they are trying out their legs somewhat unsteadily. They tend to group together like this when Raven is out of the whelping box. Surprisingly, she spends 3/4 of her time in the box. She is an excellent mother and they are very well fed. She does leave them for half an hour a day so we can get in a walk and she still gets a swim most days. There is a lamp in the box that keeps them warm when she is not there.

The one in the middle is a wavy girl and the most active one is the curly girl. Ted, the boy, is the far left one.
